Scrapping Cell Sites & Towers in New Jersey

Why Do Cell Sites Get Scrapped?
With cell companies getting bigger and more efficient comes the upgrading of their service and equipment. When a cell tower or power station gets upgraded or serviced a fair amount of uncommon scrap gets generated.
What Are Kind Of Metals In Cell Sites?
Heliax Solid Core Cable
To start I’ll discuss the specific type of wiring and cables that they use. The most abundant cable type that gets pulled is referred to as heliax or coaxial cable. There are two types; solid core and the hollow core. The solid core looks like a miniature version of the hollow but it has a solid aluminum core coated with copper then foam insulation followed by a copper shield then the external plastic coating.
Heliax Hollow Core Cable
The hollow core is exactly as it sounds, a hollow copper tube then foam insulation then a copper shield followed by the external plastic. The hollow stuff generates a little more scrap cash due to there only being a single metal in the material. So because it will require less processing, the hollow heliax wire can be processed and recycled faster for the copper inside.
THHN Cable
Next, there’s a fair amount of heavy gauge THHN cable that connects to the copper bus bar. To maximize scrap cash be sure to detach any cable connected to the bus bar. Also, there are the brass and stainless steel connectors on the jumpers (solid heliax).
Industrial Batteries
And last but not least come the power stations. Here is where you’ll find a lot of industrial batteries. With the batteries that I’ve seen come from these jobs most consist of lead-acid type but also have encountered absolyte (typically come in a steel case).
And as expected there is the junk; metal/iron and the transmitters which are aluminum and plastic pieces. I hope this proves helpful to anyone that has a cell site decommission or upgrade in the future. Thanks for reading.
